Vengeance
Revenge stories are quite a hoot. To watch someone be wronged horribly, then to see the righteous justice of their avenger get carried out by a likeable hero, is one of my favorite storylines. Sad to say, since I like to think of myself as somewhat civilized and moralish. Must be something in the blood, or maybe I have unresolved issues.
Revenge is huge in the entertainment industry. As I recall, the first really great revenge tale I got mesmerized by was The Count of Monte Christo. It worked so well because the suffering-load was enormous, and the quest for revenge so long and delicious.
Revenge has been a Hollywood staple for as long as there’s been a Hollywood. But I just watched the best revenge tale ever, by Mr. Righteous Vengeance himself, Clint Eastwood. Something of a switcheroo. The movie was Gran Torino. Don’t want to spoil the story, but will only recommend the movie. Several stars. Revenge sucks. Sacrifice is the true killer.

I saw this when it first came out. Fabulous, fabulous movie, although the racial slurs sent my eyebrows up almost to my hairline!
Thanks for the comment DG! I’m an old guy, so I’m used to insult as male bonding. I imagine the young fellas still do that to one another. That’s one thing I liked about the movie, the idea that name-calling is not the end of the world. It can be a path to friendship. Don’t know why it’s considered so horrible when it crosses racial boundries, but I’m a white guy too, so maybe I don’t get it.
Loved, loved, loved Gran Torino. Such a rich film.
Thanks Andrea!
